cleanup guidelines

Cleanup Guidelines
  • Please be on time: We will not accept any entries into the cosplay contest after 9:15am.

  • In an effort to reduce emissions for this event, please try to take public transit, scooter, bicycle or carpool if possible. If you are driving, please make sure you are allowing enough time to get to the garden to park before the cleanup starts. Parking can be tricky and busy depending on time of day, so be prepared. You can find more info on where the tram services and stops here.

  • What should I bring? Costume! But if not in costume, bring or wear layers, sunscreen, a hat, coffee mug, a water bottle, sunglasses. We will be providing coffee and vegetarian breakfast pastries, but if you have any food allergies we suggest bringing supplementary snacks. We will have a water refill station!

  • Will I be able to store my belongings? We recommend leaving your belongings safely in the car, or to carry them with you while you attend the event. We will not have a private place for you to store your belongings. We are not responsible for any lost or stolen items.

  • Can I bring my pet or children? We love animals, but please leave your pets at home while volunteering for this event! Children are gladly welcome, but must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times.

  • Whenever your bag gets full, come back to the check in area at the garden and we will weigh it, empty it and send you back out. Or give you a new bag to take out to keep going!

  • Do not remove trash from trash cans in the park. Please only remove trash that you find on the ground.

  • You might come across some of our unsheltered neighbor’s belongings (lots of items in one place, not particularly in a tent or dwelling). Please, if it looks like it could be someone’s belongings, leave them be.

  • If you find items like needles or dangerous looking materials, PLEASE leave them there and let us know the location so we can come collect them and safely deposit them into our sharps box.

  • *Do not go within 200 feet of highways.

  • *Please do not try to enter locations that require paid entry (ex. Other museums in the park, The San Diego Zoo, The Balboa Park Golf Course)

WE ARE PICKY WITH OUR PICKERS

We chose Waterhaul as our litter picker provider due to their ingenuity & mission.

We wanted to support an organization doing right by products and right by our planet. Each picker is recyclable and made using aluminum and 100% recycled polypropylene from trawl nets and lines, which is the most common form of ghost gear found on our coastline.

ALL THAT & A BAG OF RICE

Why make more plastic just to throw it out? We didn't want to collect trash in trash bags, causing more plastic to take up space in landfills. Instead, we thought leftover grain or rice bags would be the perfect solution for collection and disposal. Our friends at Hatsuzakara, Soichi and Kumi Cafe were kind enough to save their rice bags for us to use as litter collections bags. More rice please!

GLOVES MADE WITH LOVE

FOR PLANET

These general-purpose gloves are packaged in 100% recycled materials and  have a gray, high-density 90% recycled polyester/10% spandex blend shell that is cool, comfortable, and breathable. The foam nitrile manufacturing process for the GP102 uses no clean drinking water as compared to other palm coatings on the market, making the coating feel and perform like traditional micro-foam nitrile.

CleanUp Kitsune is a partnership project presented by Allgoods and it's founders Corey & Lila Cleary-Stoner. It began as a Japanese inspired performance art project to be seen picking up litter at public events. They have since grown to encompass environmental media, waste services, up-cycled goods and have began partnering with businesses and organizations to generate consumer awareness through education, culture and creativity. CleanUp Kitsune can be found at parks, events and various gatherings, entertaining guests, collecting trash and littering kindness. Since their launch in June 2023, CleanUp Kitsune has removed and sorted approximately 32,000 pieces/220lbs of litter & through their waste organization stations have diverted over 1600 pounds of waste from landfills. CleanUp Kitsune is also the recipient of the 2024 Enhancing Ecosystems sPARK award by Forever Balboa Park.
